- This week was our fourth Mediation session with management and the mediator assigned by the National Mediation Board.
- We made progress on Section 10.R-S Reassignments and Pre-Cancellations, and Section 8.Q. Contactability. Management also presented their response to our comprehensive proposal from last session.
- Moving forward, you will notice a change to our communication structure. The mediator directed both parties not to disclose specific details at this stage, which is not uncommon at this point in mediation. However, we can and will share general details of each session.
This week, our Negotiating Committee and Negotiations Strategic Communications Representative met with management and the mediator assigned by the National Mediation Board (NMB) for Mediation Session 4. AFA International Director of Collective Bargaining and General Counsel, Joe Burns, and AFA Financial Economist Teresa O’Donnal joined the Negotiating Committee during the session. *Our Negotiating Committee is supported during this process by AFA International Collective Bargaining and Legal departments.

This week we made progress on Section 10.R-S. Reassignments and Pre-Cancellations, and Section 8.Q. Contactability. We are relatively close to reaching agreement on both sections.
Management also presented their response to our comprehensive proposal from last session. Their response moved the goal post closer, but we still have work to do. Here are the general details of management’s comprehensive proposal:
- Pay rate increase from their last proposal
- Boarding Pay
- Industry standard RIGs
- 2-year duration
We also shared the executive summary of our Financial Security Survey, which published last week. We have asked management for a formal response to the survey results.
We will continue pushing for much-needed improvements to pay rates, economic provisions, and work rules. Our next session with management, which is an addition to our calendar, is on May 29-30. Even though the mediator will not be present, we plan to present our response to management’s comprehensive proposal at that time.

Carin Giauque says
I see no retro pay on their proposal! Does that mean they have no intention of back pay whatsoever??
Jeffrey Peterson (MEC President/Negotiating Committee Chairperson) says
Correct: Retro pay was not in their proposal. Management has consistently said that retro pay was off the table when we didn’t reach an agreement last summer under the aggressive bargaining schedule. Regardless, AFA will continue to propose retro pay.
